Ice maker not making ice?
Start with the simple causes: no water, a full or blocked ice sensor, a room that is too warm, or scale in the pipes. Most machines start again after one of these. Work down the list in order.

Countertop ice maker
- Water: is the tank above the MIN line? Most machines stop and light a warning when it is low.
- Ice full: empty the basket. If the light stays on, check that the ice-full sensor is clean and not blocked by stuck ice.
- Room too warm or vents blocked: move it out of the sun and leave space around the vents.
- Just moved or laid on its side: let it stand upright before running it. The manual says how long.
- Scale: white scale slows the pump and stops ice dropping. Descale it.
- Thin or stuck ice: choose the larger ice size, or descale. Ice that never drops points to a harvest fault.
- Error light: look up the code in the manual, then contact the maker if it is under warranty.
Ice maker in the fridge
- Is it switched on? Check the switch or the wire arm is in the ON position.
- Freezer temperature: it should be about 0°F (-18°C). Warmer, and ice comes slowly or not at all.
- Water filter: an old or clogged filter starves the ice maker. Replace it.
- Water supply: the valve is open, the line is not kinked, and the fill tube is not frozen.
- Ice jam: empty the bucket and break up clumps.
- New fridge or new filter: the first ice can take up to a day. Throw away the first batches.
When to call a technician
If water reaches the ice maker but no ice forms, or you hear the valve buzz with no water, a part may have failed. Check the warranty first.
