Ice makers that keep ice frozen

Almost no countertop ice maker keeps ice frozen: the basket is insulated, not cold, so ice melts back into the tank and is made again. If you want ice that stays frozen, look for a model with a refrigerated bin, or move the ice into your freezer.

Models that do it

None of the models researched here states a refrigerated bin that holds ice frozen. Treat any listing that claims it with care, and read the owner reviews.

Why the ice melts

Countertop and most undercounter machines make ice, then let it rest in an insulated bin. The meltwater runs back to the tank (or the drain) and becomes new ice. It is by design: you always get fresh ice, and the machine never needs defrosting.

How to keep ice for later

  • Scoop ice into a freezer bag every hour or two when you need a lot.
  • For parties, start the machine the day before and bag the ice as it comes.
  • A cooler next to the machine holds ice for hours.
