Undercounter ice makers
An undercounter ice maker is a built-in machine, usually 15 inches wide, that fits under the counter like a dishwasher. It needs a water line and, for most models, a drain, and keeps a large bin of ice ready all day.

Good to know before you buy
Drain: gravity or pump?
A gravity drain needs a floor drain below the machine. Without one you need a model with a drain pump, built in or as a kit.
Does the bin keep ice frozen?
Most home units have an insulated bin, not a freezer: ice slowly melts away and the machine tops it up. That is why they need a drain.
Water line
Every undercounter machine needs a cold water line. Many accept a filter; clearer ice and less scale.
Install
Check the cut-out width, height and depth in the spec sheet, and whether it vents from the front. Front venting lets it sit fully flush.
What owners complain about
Faults that come up again and again in one- and two-star reviews. Read them before you buy.
KitchenAid 15-inch Automatic Clear Ice Maker
- Drain pump failures (one 1-star owner: replaced in year 1, failed again around year 2)
- Stops making ice within the first year or two (evaporator, compressor or board repairs, one bill near $1,200)
- Overflowing tray water melts the ice, so it comes out wet
- Runs hot (one owner measured about 100 F air around it) and the drain gurgles
GE Profile 15-inch Gourmet Nugget Ice Maker
- Loud, with some owners reporting noise that needed service
- Long repair waits (one owner without ice for about 2 years of visits, another waited on a backordered part)
- Pump kit and door panel cost extra, and it wastes a lot of water into the drain
- Ice can melt fast or come out slushy
Whirlpool 15-inch Icemaker
- Ice cutter grid breaking (one owner replaced it 4 times in about 18 months)
- Arrived missing a pump, or quit after an hour until a valve was replaced (1-star reviews)
- Ice thinner than the spec promises
- Loud, and heavy drain-water volume
